Turn to our reading list

This list features the key books that will help you understand irrational and rational thinking, and how to change your relationship with anxiety. The five books listed below should be read in this order, setting up the framework to build your knowledge of OCD.

The most significant book to read and this is why it is the first one. It outlines specifically how we catastrophise our situations and we control through our perspectives the resulting emotional discomfort. In this book it shares the core principles of REBT including unconditional self and life acceptance and rational thinking, this is game changing for OCD because it helps us to break down our irrational beliefs which are at the core of the chronic anxiety and chronic guilt cycle.

A pioneering book in the anxiety community that really explains in depth the anxiety experience in anxiety disorders. This book has often been regarded as “the bible of the anxiety community”. It covers many significant points needed in the anxiety recovery journey. It doesn’t however, go into the depths of what’s needed for full OCD recovery. This book helps us to see that we can go forward confidently bringing anxiety with us, rather than trying to run from it.

This book outlines unconditional self, life and other acceptance in great detail – which is crucial in the OCD Recovery journey. Albert Ellis goes into great detail, explaining how unconditional self acceptance leads to absence of emotional discomfort while conditional self acceptance gets us into a whole host of emotional issues.

One of the best selling books on perception and how we view our suffering and what meaning we attach to this. Based on his experience surviving concentration camps, Viktor Frankl helps us to see that we can endure difficult life circumstances and motivates us to find meaning and purpose in life.

A book delivering a very relatable message to OCD and anxiety sufferers. This book helps us to understand our involvement in the anxiety cycle and how by stepping back from it and taking an active role in living life on our own terms without anxiety calling the shots, we can reach a life free from panic and anxiety.

This book covers the importance of stoicism and how rational thinking leads to healthier emotional responses.
