What is an OCD
Recovery Coach?

An OCD Recovery Coach shares and provides what’s needed, having overcome the many obstacles on the way to recovery themselves.

what is an ocd recovery coach

We share our experience, tools, resources and vast knowledge of OCD, to guide sufferers along the road to recovery. This form of support exists in other areas of mental health, and it’s something that’s essential for OCD.

Similar to life coaches, an OCD Recovery Coach is there to walk alongside you on your path to recovery, guiding you through the many peaks and troughs, helping you navigate decisions like “what will help and what will hinder me?”, “how should I use these tools I’ve learnt?” and much more. If you already have a CBT therapist Robert can work alongside them. Or, if you’ve already learnt all of the tools needed through past therapy work but you’re still anxious, Robert can help you to continue applying the tools you already have to daily life as well as introducing the additional (and fundamental) approaches that helped him achieve recovery – including rational thinking, getting under fears and unconditional self and life acceptance.

OCD Recovery Coaches are not healthcare professionals, and do not diagnose the people they work with. We clarify goals and identify any obstacles that need to be looked at and worked on, and from here work with you to produce an action plan to recover.

As a recovery coach, Robert works with clients in the following ways:

  • Sharing his vast knowledge of OCD, experience having helped thousands, tools and resources to guide you along the road to recovery
  • Helping you to define your recovery goals, where you want to be and helping you to see that a life without fear is possible
  • Formulating a plan with you that uses the existing tools you’ve learnt already as well as additional resources Robert picked up during his own recovery journey so that you have a clear path to your own recovery
  • Point you to additional resources you will need, recommend a series of books to give you an understanding of how OCD operates and the works of anxiety pioneers of the past and present
  • Regular check-ins and support so you’re not walking the path alone. We know how it feels when your only support is a weekly therapy session. Sometimes we need extra motivation and encouragement to keep moving forwards. So Robert’s also there to encourage you, provide structure and motivation to achieve your recovery goals.

There is a common misconception that life coaching is simply therapy without a license. This could not be further from the truth. There is absolutely a place for both. Robert has extensive knowledge of OCD and how to recover from it, in fact many of our clients tell us we have an even deeper understanding of OCD than the specialist therapists they’ve seen. Whether that is true or not isn’t actually important. What’s important is that we’ve all been to all the different therapies out there and can see what works and what doesn’t. Robert knows the tool kit that’s needed from first-hand experience and can see what is helpful and what isn’t.

There are very few therapists out there who specialise in OCD – and even those that do – the numbers drop dramatically when we look at those who have a good enough understanding of OCD to get real results for their clients. The benefit to working with Robert as a life coach is that he can help guide and advise on the tools you already have as well as introducing some additional tools – such as unconditional self and life acceptance which has been ground breaking for so many of us in achieving full recovery.
